Re: Server Reset Pending.
Post your loadout pic! Here's Fink_mage: http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/2204/floadoutjh2.jpg Belthronding is what really cracked open the possibilities with this character (outside of the obvious Bladeturner, heh), helping me keep my dex high in unexpected ways. The real battle with this charact...

Re: Server Reset Pending.
Awesome! Good luck, Warrior!
Crim, do you have any definite time during which you plan to do the big ol reset, so we can plan accordingly?

[quote author=Warrior link=board=thinktank;num=1188876616;start=0#1 date=09/04/07 at 06:04:44]I'm not sure about tutorial text as such being displayed anywhere, I still feel the ? should cover the basics. And more windows would be a no-no I think. As you mention, the problem with the ? as of today i...

New Player tutorial mode
I think a number of people had this idea simultaneously while reading through the "focus on the new user" thread, so I'll bring it up here for discussion. As a longer term project, we could look at the idea of having a built-in tutorial mode. This mode could be entered when joining a server as a new...

Re: Floating eye perma-paralysis sucks.
Worms at least are something a player can immediately learn from as they dive in and think they've hit the exp jackpot. A first-time user who runs into their first floating eye is just sad - the guy I mentioned above suicided and never came back.

Re: Focus on the New User
Well, re: macros, I'm trying to think in terms of the short-term user who may find it a bit daunting to pore over text files, or wade through the kooky macro menu. It would be great to have a setup that defangs macros for the short- and medium-term user, who may find arcane kookiness to be a minus a...

The "first back after reset" connection bug sucks.
Problem: A completely kooky element of MAngband is what happens to the first person who connects to a server after it has been reset. They get a god-awful connection until they reconnect. I don't even want to know how many new users have quietly logged on late at night after a server reset, only to...

Dealing with macros sucks.
Problem : MAngband pretty much assumes the use of macros. Macros are arcane and difficult to set up for the casual first-time user. We've tried to streamline it a tad by having a forum post to point to, but it still is a complicated and error-prone experience to deal with them, and not having them ...

Our documentation sucks.
Problem: We've got dozens of overlapping files, guides, faqs, docs, manuals, help files, and everything else scatterred all over the place. Half of them reference things that havent been in the game in eons, and the other half are too long, too vague, too general, or too brief. News flash: most peo...

The WindowsXP corrupted display bug sucks.
Problem: The common display bug that WindowsXP users run into sucks. This bug makes the game look like some hokey ghetto pre-alpha release that's barely working and all hacked together. Even finding out that its not intentional is not easy, as it just looks like mangband is a buggy alpha-state ga...

BSV's in town suck, and are fun for noone.
Problem: It is almost completely unconsciounable in my book to put monsters in town that spawn all over the place that can completely tool a new player. This is just completely lame, and sucks. Games need a safe breather spot, where the player is able to focus on their equipment, talking to players...

Floating eye endless-paralysis loop sucks
Problem: Due to how the Floating Eye monster is implemented, new users often run into the situation where they get stuck being endlessly paralysed by Floating Eyes. If noone is on to help them, they have no real recourse but to leave the game. This sucks. Because they often run into this monster ea...
