Artefacts may only be found once

Post by Ace » Tue 22.07.2008, 08:30

HI there !

Regarding the ticket 541 (Artefactsmay on be found once) - when a character dies he might have changed preferences due to lost equipmentand he would like to re-find the crappy artefacts too. Therfore i suggest the list is alittle more complex and tracks, which artefacts have been found since the last death. These do not show up anymore and can be sold to a shop once. But when you die, you will be able to find all artefacts again, but the selling price for already found artefacts stays at 0. (or they crumble to dust if you bring them above their minimum depth :)

That's an interesting idea Ace. Let me try an explain why we probably wouldn't want to do this.

We don't really believe in ghosts. :) They aren't a feature of Angband. We would turn them off completely (in fact I think we did, briefly) if we could. Long, long ago the network code in MAngband was a lot worse than it is today and many people were on dialup modems. Back then death caused by disconnection was common place. Thus, ghosts were added as somewhat fair compensation if you got killed due to no fault of your own. Today, death by disconnection is a much rarer event. Nothing wrong with wanting many lives, it's just not Angband.

So, given we don't believe in ghosts it's very unlikely any features would be implemented to support ghosts or in any way support dying or making death less painful.

As Crimson said the other day, when you die "be a man, off yourself" :-)

The main purposes behind the proposed change, which is: "if you sell an artifact to a shop it's less likely you'll find it again" are:

* Prevent huge amounts of money flooding into the game from boomerang arts
* Prevent low value boomerang arts becoming annoying.

There are also other interesting side effects which add to the game play. Like having to make difficult decisions sometimes, which is in keeping with the spirit of Angband.

And in any case, if you *really* wanted an artifact you had previously sold to a shop you could always buy it from another player.
