Bigger stuff in town

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Why not have bigger stuff come rolling through town?  Nothing TOO horribly uber, but I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to see a dragon wander through town from time to time.  People seem to think that town is safe.  IT'S NOT.  Hiding in your house is safe.  Idling in town isn't.

Also, would it be possible to remove the fear that the townies have?  You invariably end up with all the townies huddled on the outskirts of town because a level 50 character wandered towards them, and they cowered in fear.  If a little character goes to try to then kill townies for money for gear, they're walking into a death trap.

You MIGHT want to keep fear on BSVs, 'cos they can screw up a little character in short order, and they probably SHOULD be cowering in fear if a big person runs near them.  However, since townies OTHER than BSVs don't auto attack players, they should be able to mingle around town.

Also, a lot of these townies pick things up (ALL should pick things up, in my opinion), and while it hasn't been a big deal that I've seen while I've been back, it will help to eliminate any garbage left around in town.

I think the "8" in the tavern entrance should count as a Glyph of Warding. Then the building would have a purpose.
It would prevent newcomers from being instantly killed by a town monster such as a Battle scarred veteran. It also would provide a place for the newcomer to hide if a big monster runs around in town, and they don't have enough money to get a house (if there are any).

I disagree.

The ONLY safe place to be is inside your home.  Granted, BSVs are about the only thing that newbies have to fear in town, but it'll also teach them that MAngband isn't a safe place to just sit around at.

I kinda like the idea of 8 being a "safe house", I dont know how many times I have had to run from a BSV with a low level char, and I think that the only things that shouldn't come through town from time to time is the last 2 pages of uniques, everthing else is fair game.
Let everyone be warned who is in town by a game wide announcement of something like "You hear a loud crack like a mountain breaking open." and it could led out 1 to 20 nastys.  Personally I would love to see great wyrms and black reavers show up, it would be great fun.
