So when I have new players start playing, they usually take a long time in the character creation menu and the welcome screen, both of which can cause timeouts under very short time limits. This is very noob unfriendly and they think the game is broken.

I also believe that the macro screen can cause timeouts.

When coding PWMAngband I've found a ton of those timeouts... it's because no "keepalive" packet is sent to the server so it thinks the player has left the game. A ticket has been submitted to the MAngband bug database to deal with this issue.
