It's really not that difficult to tell who someone is based on their play styles.  I have my own, Angus has his, and Kull has his.  You just have to pay close attention to the details, and it's often as clear as seeing the IP itself.

I will, however, freely admit that I've made mistakes in the past, and killed actual newbies.  As soon as I found out this was the case, I made it up to them, and often times in spades.

This isn't a game most people find on accident, they find it because someone showed it to them.  There's a paper trail, of sorts, that you can also follow back to the beginning.
