no box with an error message afterwards?

Post details to your system win/linus and which exe youre starting (there should be several SDL and normal one)

No... I just think you tried to create a character with a name that already exists. You can't do that...
Just try again, this time with another name for your char...
(btw... the best way to check which charnames are already taken is to go to this page: http://www.mangband.org/Main/HighScoreChart)
