That's pretty clever using ø for Identify. My only suggestion is that you make an easier Destruct macro, since you might not want to have two modifier keys on a macro you'll be hitting in a panic. Of course, the important thing is making macroes that work for you, so maybe you already have lightning reflexes on hitting Ctrl-Shift-F4.

This is an interesting thread, good idea Zal! :)

My macros:

F1: Alternative teleport (phase door, teleport level)
F2: Speed (staff or potion) - If I carry both I've got the potions on F2 and staff on Shift+F2
F3: Heal (starting with csw, then ccw, then healing, I don't normally carry more than one type of healing but if I do I will usually place the smaller one on F1.
F4: Main teleport (Teleport scrolls or Teleport staff)

F5: *Destruction* (staff or scroll) - If I carry both I've got the scrolls on F2 and staff on Shift+F2
F6: Available for detection-type rod (typically detect traps or doors/stairs
F7: Identify
F8: Detection (or detect doors/stairs)

F9: Recall
F10: Available (often some rod or scroll or something)
F11: Available (often some rod or scroll or something)
F12: Available (often some rod or scroll or something)

and the recent random weird macros:
Ctrl+F10 = Recharging
Ctrl+F11 = Magic Mapping

I've used the identical F1-F4 setup since I started playing and I can reach those keys in no time, I always have my hand hovering over them ready to heal or teleport instantly. F5 for *Destruction* works well also but I guess I could rearrange the keys a bit now, since I don't use the alternative teleport (F1) all that much anymore. Ideally I guess it'd be *Destruction* on F1 and alternative teleport on F5 (to avoid the distance between F4 and F5) but I'm used to the setup now so I'll stick to it. Obviously when I'm a non-warrior I use many more macros than these but even then I do mostly everything by hand (besides stuff that needs targetting).

I tend not to use macros like SHIFT+F6 which can't be pressed with only one hand very easily, or I use them for utility stuff.
Usually I go with F1 for healing, F2 for speed, F3 for teleport, F4 for panic (staff of tele, *des*), F5 for main ranged attack (missiles, orb, ball spell...), F6 for secondary ranged attack, F7 and F8 for mixed stuff (rods or minor spells like magic missile...), F9 for disarm traps, F10 for trap/door detection, F11 for monster detection, F12 for magic mapping, ù for ID, INS/SUP/BACK/END/PGUP/PGDN for any support spells (armor, heroism, berserk, holy prayer, speed, prot from evil, sanctuary, word of des, geno...). Other available spells like glyph or object detection are macroed to SHIFT+Fx keys.

Guys, would you care to upload all those great sets into the online macro editor? There's a 'share' button there too :) Perhaps that would give it the testing it needs.

would it work to macro something like this as "super panic button" that tries all options?

\e = normal escape
@q1 = healing
\e = in case iam out of healing pots
@q2 = spd to speed up all further steps as far as possible
\e = in case iam out of speed pots
@r1 = telescroll
\e = in case iam out of scrolls too
@u1 = tele staff
\e = in case iam out of staves too
@p3b = portal

Full macro: \eq1\eq2\er1\eu1\ep3b

I tried the macro-maker, but somehow, F12 is missing. I can't set it up to be used.

they're obviously Zal's changed where appropriate =D

Tab - *DESTRUCTION*, \eu1 (staves inscribed @u1)
F1 - Orb of Draining \e*tp3b (book inscribed @p3)
F2 - Some kind of player heal that uses alot of mana and heals really well \e(p7C
F3 - Quaff Restore Mana, \eq1 (potions inscribed @q1)
F4- *DESTRUCTION*, \eu1 (staves inscribed @u1)
F5 - 300 hp heal \ep4c (book is @p4)
F6 - Haste (staves) \eu5 (inscribed @u5)
F7 - Teleport \ep5b (requires ethereal openings, book @p5)
F6 - Healing spell (CSW, CCW or Heal) \ep2c or \ep3c or \ep4c
F8 - Identify \ep6c (book @p6...)
F9 - Detection \ep6b
F10 - Glyph of Warding \ep4e
F11 - Recharging \ep8b
F12 - Teleport Other (monster) \e*tp5c

~ -Some kind of player healing spell that uses a little bit of mana and doesn't heal too well \e(p4C (book is @p4) (I use this one for Warrior)
* - 2k hp heal, \ep7c

For some reason, creating a macro for shift-functionkey overwrites the macro mapped to the function key itself. I'm currently missing my prayer macro.

I've finally decided to post what i do with my macros here. I have a general strategy of keeping the most key macros close together, and close to my left hand.
F1 and F2:
I use these 2 as a weak and a strong heal. Weak being on F1, and strong being on F2. You start to *need* 2 different heal macros after heal pots (or stronger heal spells) become more relevant. You still need CCWs in case you get some status effect from something you didn't resist. Then later, it becoms heal on f1 and *heal* on f2, once you get a need for *heals*.
F3:
Usually, i've used this button for haste self, but i'm tempted to go away from that. As any class that needs a maji staff or mana pots for battle, this button should be used for mana resoration. F3 mana pot, shift F3 for maji staff. That way, if you are in a battle where something drains charges, the easiest button to hit is the one that you can trust. (I also reccomend that you do a similar thing with heal staffs so that you don't go broke buying heal pots...at least untill you are *rich*. Then, buy as many consumables as you need, and try to get away from stuff that may be unreliable like staffs)
F4 and F5:
These are my panic buttons. F4 is *panic*, F5 is panic. I place them here because, on my keyboard (and most keyboards) their is a gap between them. This gap allows me to not worry about perfect accuracy when panicking. I can just aim toward the correct side of the panic aria, and not worry about missing. Lower lvls, F4 should be teleport, F5 should be phase door. Once phase door becomes (relatively) useless, you should work your way to putting *destruct* on F4, and teleport on F5. At this point, things start to get more intense. If you do not have all resists yet, you may want to have F4 do more than one thing (use destruct staff then read destruct scroll). F5 you don't need to worry about as much, since you should only use it if death is not *imminent* (don't use it if you are confused or something. That way, you don't have to think about weather or not your status will effect it. You *know* that F4 will work.)

I put all of these key buttons near each other. That way, you never have to think about moving your hand in battle.

tab and `
I use tab and ` for ranged attacks. Tab is bigger for me, so it is the main ranged one. ` is the secondary one. Relatively simple, and still close to my battle buttons.
F6-8:
I generally use these on a case-by-case basis. I put stuff here that doesn't fall into other places. Buffs, swaps...anything that i need a place for. With my rogue, i fully used f7 and 8 for buffs, and F6 for swaps.
F9:
I *always* use F9 as stone to mud. This is just personal prefrence, but I find that being right next to a gap makes it easier to use, which is important. Stone to mud is a *key* preparation spell. I also use shift F9 as my recharge macro. This just came from me originally only useing recharge for stone to mud wands. This can really go nearly anywhere, but i reccomend you keep it near something that you are used to recharging. Once you find a place you like, keep it there.

F10 and 11:
these are more keys that I take case by case. I think though, from now on, they will probably be battle related in some way. Teleport away was on F10 with my rogue. I have no idea what I used F11 for. Oh yeah, that was mapped to 'use banish staff'...I rarely used that macro. Reasons why will be explained later.

F12:
This button i use for ID, and only ID. You need to ID a lot of stuff in mangband, I think its best that their isn't anything directly next to the button.

Finally, make sure that the items you use for your macros have some similarity to which they go to. It can be an important thing when you aren't quite sure which button goes to what action.

Now you may ask why I didn't map things like word of recall and other key spells. I find that, the more you have to map, the more you have to think and aim. If you press a macro like word of recall, it can be bad if you can't cancel the recall. Also, certain spells don't have quite the same need to be on a macro button. Detect monsters, for example, is a spell that you have for a long time. You should know it quite well, and their is rarely any need to spam it. I think that having it on a macro button is a simple waste of space AND time, since, for me, it is easier to remember m,a,b than it is to remember which button i have it on. I, however, only use F1-12, `, and tab. I'm sure that some keyboards have plenty of space to have all their detection spells in the same place, as well as some characters. (for example, as emulord, I have f7 as detection, and f8 as clarvoyance).

I hope that will be of some help to people. Its a much more verbose explanation of macros locations, so it probably best suited for those that wish to try and learn more about macro style, and have already gotten a general idea of how to organize macros. I also think that it was, at the very least, of some help to me, making me think about whats best for me with my macros.
Anything worth being done, is worth being overdone.

So let me get that straight... When you're in the thick of it, and run low on mana, you reach for the F3 key and accidentally hit F4 instead. :-(

Actually, when I don't want to use one I just dont carry a staff of summoning or uninscribe it.

On the other hand when Summoning on me in anti-summon corridor is what I want I just need to rest my 4 fingers on F1 F2 F3 F4 and move my index when I want to regarge staff. Its quite an efficient way to train the lazy way.

Maybe you will like my way. If i miss the *dest* button on F4 i hit teleport or tele other. Only bad thing is..i dont use it since i have the Panicbutton at TAB.^^

http://de.geocities.com/michailski/PaladinMacros.txt

Okay, i explain...^^

First Line contanis the Functionbuttons and the second Line the Macros. The third Line contains the Macros if i use the Functionbuttons with Shift. If i need its easy to build the next line for Crtl.
All below is Info about the Prayers special for Paladins (If i need to Look i havent to open Thorbears Page each time). http://thorbear.navhost.com/mangband/mangband.php

The File is at my Desktop and if i open it the Window appears at the Bottom of my Desktop. The Format exactly Displays the Area with the Macros. One Mouseclick between the lower Mangband Windows
and it is in Front. The Mainwindow stays free. I can still see what happens around me. And if needet i m able to react after another Click on the Mainwindow.

Of course. At the moment i dont need this File but if i rework Macros or if i play other Classes it is a big help. Special for Mages and Priests.

[Edit] I forgot. I am that lazy with my Macros that i use only two for my Palas. A startermacro with the basicprayers and that One here for bigger Chars.^^
