Mangband mage/priest Newbie killers

If you see any of these as a mage/priest, RUN to nearest stair. As anyone else you might stand a chance. But run if you're unsure or position yourself on the stair for a quick escape.

MAGE: Get Magic missile, don't melee unless you're 100% rdy to die, always escape if you don't have 2 mana. Or feel incredibly lucky.

PRIEST: Don't learn any spells on level 1, but bring a Word of Recall scroll down with you.

Lvl 1 you should go between 50 and 150 feet: (stairing up/down between 100 and 150 seems to be my favourite.)

MAGE: Learn Magic missile, don't melee unless you're 100% rdy to die, always escape if you don't have 2 mana. Or feel incredibly lucky.

PRIEST: Don't learn any spells on level 1, but bring a Word of Recall scroll down with you.

Killers are:
More than 1 monster at a time.
Brown p - Novice warriors
Dark blue p - Novice rogues
Dark green p - Novice priests
White p - Novice paladins
Orange C - Fang/Grip
Grey B - Raven
Black B - Crow
Brown m - Brown Mold (confuses)
Grey k - Kobold archer (OUCH)
Red k - kobold shaman (can confuse and curse for 20 damage or so)
Black S - Cave Spider

-----------------------------------------------------

Lvl 2-5 should go between 150 and 300 feet:

MAGE: Learn Phase door and be rdy to use it if you stair into some bad guys. Learn Detect monsters, and use it to kill easy targets if you wish. Stay close to stairs for a quick escape, and be ready to use word of recall as an expensive escape if you really have to.

PRIEST: At level 5, get Words of Wisdom (book 2) if you were rich at start, you should have it. Learn Portal and Cure serious wonds. Heal in combat on 1 vs 1 or 1 vs 2 fights. If more than 2 enemies at once, portal or run.

Killers are:
More than 1 monster at a time.
Brown p - Novice warriors
Dark blue p - Novice rogues
Dark green p - Novice priests
White p - Novice paladins
Black S - Cave Spider
Orange o - Snagas
Green o - Cave orcs
grey k - Kobold archer (OUCH)
red k - kobold shaman (can confuse and curse for 20 damage or so)
k - If there's 2-3 at the same spot, RUN! (it's Mughash the kobold lord)
----------------------------------------------------------------

lvl 6-9 should go between 300 and 800 feet:

MAGE: Magic missile galore, and detect for single monsters, leave most packs of monsters alone. (learn backup spells if you will use them: Light area, cure light wounds, detect traps/doors/stairs. Get book 2 learn teleport self. DON'T use lightning bolt. It's only good for when monsters are in a straight line away from you, and if they are that at this level, you'll die. Hehe.
REST ALOT (get an amulet of regeneration if you can) (if you have 50-60HP and 13-15 mana, you can kill baby dragons, do nothing but magic missile/cure serious wounds potions.)

PRIEST: Melee and be careful. Usually it doesn't pay off wasting time trying to killing tough orcs. Kill easier targets. At level 9, get orb of draining (book 3) Rock the world you'll be level 40 before you know it.

Killers are:
A single unique monster (you don't need to kill them all first time you meet them)
A group of monsters, prefer to kill 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 if you can. If not, escape ;)
Brown p - Novice warriors
Dark green p - Novice priests
White p - Novice paladins
Orange S - Wood spiders
Umber B - Nighthawk
k - If there's 2-3 at the same spot, RUN! (it's Mughash the kobold lord)
o - Any pack of orcs... NASTY!
Y - The Yeti
f - All cats in Mangband hit HARD!
Dark green h - dark elven priest (confuses and has nasty spells)
Red h- dark elven mage (confuses and has nasty spells)
Z - lure them around a corner and fight while running away from them if they blind you.
brown c - Stegocentipede (Moves faster than you do. TELEPORT!)
orange j - Ochre jelly (Moves faster than you do. TELEPORT!)

Someone please correct me if I've forgotten some monsters that're terribly horribly lethal or tell me how improve this guide plz ;)

I found the best way to get casters started is with a sling or short bow.
