Clans/Parties

Post by Maegdae » Sun 02.03.2003, 21:42

 I just had an idea (just ignore it if it doesn't make sense) for expanding Mangband using the current party system.  Dunno if this should fit in the Wishlist section;
Currently, parties are used on a temporary basis, with people joining and leaving parties every time they enter the game.  How about a Party forum, where people could create semi-permanent party pages, where they
could list members, party rules, party benefits, etc.
Party members could help each other out, set up diving times, etc
Here's an example of a possible party page:

   Citizens of Good

Benefits:

Low priced gear available from other party members

Laws:

All party members must be either a priest or paladin
No pk'ing
All party members must defend any party member attacked by another player

Members:
*E'Tarth
*Blingli

*names created randomly

I really, really don't like clans.

I've created and led some of the largest for Q2, played in ones for EO and other MPORPG's. Clans are frequently the worst thing to happen to gaming... they magnify the ego issues.

Personal opinion of course, but one thing I like about Mang is that there *are* no clans.

Did you just start playing one of those FPS games? Yeah, sounds about right. You're welcome to start your own "clans", you just have to host your page somewhere else and update them accordingly.. the clan owner has to add people to the party, etc etc.

I have to agree with Toast on this though. They always ruin an otherwise good game, and once all the high level players from Oregon (ahem) started one of their own, nobody would want to compete with any of them for fear of retaliation from the whole clan. Which basically means you're dead on sight if you log on during a certain 12-hour time block every day. And what happens when the seedier clans that WILL form start making their recruits go through initiations, like stealing from other players, killing a newbie, crashing the server, exploiting a bug, etc? Man, it's one step away from a bad fraternity. We simply don't have the player base to support this kind of system, and Crimson's just one guy who has a life outside the game. You never know when he's going to be available, so the one police unit basically has random hours. If you want to make most of the few people who regularly play here leave, that's a good way to do it.

Re FPS, Nah, played em for years. The nick 'Toast' was from LAN play on the original Quake, after I fell in the lava one too many times.

(mumbles) Stupid Ctrl+W closing my window..

Whoops, sorry Toast, that reply was only to Maegdae's message :) I figured you'd been playing them a lot cause you led some big clans, and that's no overnight accomplishment.

I won't support any clan that thinks they need to spoof their IP addresses and post anonymously. That's the signature of something I don't want to deal with, and if you become a problem you will be dealt with expediently. I'll be watching. Given the things I have also heard about said clan and leader, I will be watching closely.

Information follows.

I checked your whois info on arin.net just to make sure I wasn't insane on this one.

For your convenience, here's RFC 1918 section 3, Private Address Space.
Because private addresses have no global meaning, routing information about private networks shall not be propagated on inter-enterprise links, and packets with private source or destination addresses should not be forwarded across such links."
From your email address which you so nicely provided, I found that "orcs" is just a hosting company - which does not lessen your anonymity. By the way, hostedtoday costs 1/6th as much for more service... you might want to save a few bucks and switch.

You need to fix that if you don't know what I'm talking about, and you really should register an account here on the forums. I am highly suspicious of a spoofed, anonymous posting like that. Sounds shady to me.

Ok Berendol do you really think than Angus, BigJuan and myself are a fraternity?  Now we might guzzle lots of whiskey while playing but a fraternity? Come on now we are just having fun like everyone else here (sometime on the backs of other players).  Just rember to run if you hear Rammstein playing in the background ;D

Fraternity? I'm afraid you lost me there. Anyways, I think it's great that folks (like you guys) are playing together and stuff. I just don't like the LEET clan crowd that usually forms with their ranks and junk.

(edit) Oh. I reread the thread. Sorry if there was confusion over how I thought of you three. Anyways, you guys are not a problem - you play by the rules and are more mature than a lot of people I know. And you don't do the whole leet thing, which I appreciate. Sure, you might slay your foes once in awhile, but that's acceptable. I can deal out slaps on the wrist on my server too.

Yes, we are Angjuanguar of Borg.  Resistance is futile.  You will be assimiliated.
