Purpose of the 4 beta servers?

Post by PowerWyrm » Mon 14.04.2008, 10:50

Since 1.1.0 final is out, why keeping 4 beta servers? It would be better to have one 1.1.0 ironman server, and maybe a test server for 1.2 no?

If individuals want to run a server, they can. It's not for anyone else to dictate who should run a server and who should not. There is only one official server, on mangband.org. You are free to run your own server, as is everyone else, and all will appear on the meta server.

That said, 1.1.0 final is not out as such. Internally the current version is beta2 and this is why some servers on the meta are reporting this version. The official server runs the same beta2 code, but we chose not to advertise this to avoid people mistakenly thinking we would be wiping the instance when we move to 1.1.0 final.

Well the official server up running a standard version on a Linux host. The ironman.smartbirdie.tv version is the same code running with the ironman option set, also on a Linux box. The two running at seymourfamily.org are both running on the same physical box, and that's running Windows Server 2003. So we're testing bot normal and ironman modes on both Linux and Windows. As Jug said though, only the one instance is the official instance. 8)
