Whelk's Accrued Wisdom

Day 1:

Don't play MAngband while watching the Olympics. While tempting to glance up at the TV to watch as the announcers shout about the shattering of world-records, the horde of black orcs and Uruks aren't tuning in and won't pause in their efforts to kill you. You can always DVR or YouTube the exciting Olympics moments. You can't reload an old save file of your slain MAngband character.

Day 2:

When you see a monster you're not familiar with, don't say, "Eh, I bet I could take that on - I'll stick to ranged attacks just in case."

Day 3:

Sometimes it's best to just pretend the chat window isn't there.

It's a shame Whelk didn't accrue more wisdom. I was looking forward to see where this went... :)

I was afraid to post here, because it would break his format! :)

Moving to the other side of the planet - preparations have been sucking up a lot of my free time. Don't worry, I'll be accruing more wisdom soon.

I got one:

ALWAYS have that one scroll of uncursing on you, just in case you want to try on that cool "Amulet of fondle Your Day Up".

Day 4:

If the locals in a foreign country give you trouble and refuse to set up your Internet connection, you can always sneak in some play time at the office.

Didn't get fired, but did have some issues at work that were unrelated to MAngband-playing. Resolved for the time being, so I'll see if I can become any wiser now that I'm working from home.

It's good to be back in the USA!

This reminds me of the thing i would always say, don't eat while playing, especially if it's Sonic, for some reason =P

This is good wisdom.

It's nice being able to work from home, though the work itself isn't the greatest (mainly dealing with grumpy clients on the phone and trying to help computer-illiterates fix their computers).

Also, the wife sometimes expects me to help around the house since I'm already at home.

My latest hurtle to diving (ha!) into MAngband is that I've just decided that I love Ubuntu, and I have yet to find a way to play it on this OS.

Accrued Wisdom for today:

Don't ever think, "I'm not going to waste my time with that sleeping monster; I won't even get experience from it." It'll somehow manage to be around when you're running for your life with 2 health left and it will land a lucky hit on you, finishing you off. On top of the pain of dying, you'll feel embarrassed by the file listing the pitiful creature as the one that killed you.

Thanks to Domiano pointing me in the direction of the "how to compile on Linux" page, I'm now able to MAngband in all its glory. I appreciate it, buddy.

Today's Wisdom:

There actually is a chance, however small, that Phase Door will teleport you away from that horde of monsters instead of deeper into their ranks.
