Massively Botched Rescue
Massively Botched Rescue
Something very strange just happened on the main server. I was handing out semi-worthless stuff from running around on 1200ft (+3,+2 broadswords and things like that). Suddenly, some low level players who were running around on 300ft were both killed by a Dreadmaster.
A Dreadmaster on 300ft. Knowing that a Dreadmaster was bad (it had the word "dread" in it's name), but not knowing just how bad it was, I decided to offer a rescue. They accepted, and I recalled down and killed it. As soon as I killed it, both of them shot up roughly 20 levels. One of them was level one to begin with (I think it was from experience drain). Oops.
I didn't know that Dreadmasters were that EXP-valuable. I went on to clear a small pit filled with surprisingly difficult monsters (they took 10 heal potions). I assumed that the monsters in the pit just had cool sounding names and weren't worth much EXP. Luckily, I was right on that. The pit didn't have much of an impact on the other people's experience (or maybe I missed it, I was preoccupied with not dying).
I'm just posting this topic to say that this wasn't a case of powerleveling, it was an honest mistake. None of us knew that these things gave so much EXP. I know that all the mods here are pretty cool when it comes to the RNG trying to get nubnub banned, but I just want to make sure that everyone knows what happened. It was pretty awesome, but it was unintentional.

Allona, get thee to the nunnery.

Sounds like you had something like the "Miniature Cell" Vault. It's a lesser vault, and so can show up pretty early in the game, but it contains five '8's, which are monsters/treasures that can be 40/20 levels out of depth. At 300' that means monsters from 2300' and items from 1300'. Dreadmasters fit that description, IIRC.

I managed to get a screencap of the aftermath. Unfortunately, I didn't think of getting one earlier.

There was a glaubrezou, a hezrou, a nine headed hydra, a lich, Bill the Stone Troll, Wormtongue, and some other horrible things, like that Dreadmaster.

That's a "Zoo of Concentrated Death (Death by spam, lucky 13x13...)", also a lesser vault, but with *25* 8s instead of the 5 in the smaller vault. It's one of Chris Atenasio's vaults, defined in the source, along with two others, as "# Vaults designed to kill you".

Re: Massively Botched Rescue
It's super rare to see vaults like that so shallow and it's not a problem that the guys gained a few levels, RNG keeps those situations rare enough for it not to have an impact beyond being a really great story and fun for those involved :)
