Server problems lately?

Post by Fink » Tue 29.11.2005, 18:26

This afternoon, we had a server crash after which the state of the world was reverted to a good deal earlier (character saves were of course fine and latest tho). Some players who were on lost houses they had recently bought and filled etc.

One of the players mentioned that this had happened a couple times recently - making me wonder if perhaps there is something icky going on with the server? Im thinking back to the prior instance, where it lasted quite some time without any major issue (right up to the implossion at the end , of course, heh). The current instance is only 9 months old or so, so Im suprised to hear of crashes like this starting to happen.

Is there perhaps something not so good going on with the server? Hardware wackines or anything?

When time travel happens, it's always because the server didn't get to save its "server" savefile when it exited.

It's possible that something forced it to exit, that the disk was full, or that there was bad hardware or a power failure involved.

We'll have to wait to hear back from Crimson about that.

Yeah. I know it can happen now and then, I'm just worried that the fact it has happened a few times lately is a sign of some problem. Fingers crossed!

Ah, I just noticed this comment in the bug session, from May - ie, it seems this has been happening more broadly, time wise, than I realized:

Yep, this has happened at least three times now since I started playing again, 6-7 weeks ago.
I'm also pretty sure another player mentioned that it happened at least one more time during this period.

In yesterdays crash I lost two rather large houses and all items in the house I bought most recently.
In addition to that I also lost the key to another house that still has the objects inside, and a few hundred k$ from my town house, so the bug seems to affect both town houses and wilderness houses.
Unique kills also didn't save.

But, as polysatan said, character saves were ok, so... could've been worse. But it'd be nice not having to worry about our characters eventually ending up as crashed-server-dinner.

The abserd thing is not much has happened to me in these instances... I guess if you play more the affects of these crashes are more devastating.
Starting all the way over doesn't look very appealing to me, but if it will fix this problem I am all for it.

I hear of a new mangband.org server coming out, is this true?
