We could see if we can get a little announcement of the competition (when we have a date) on the various Angband fan sites on the net too.  To try and encourage more interest in MAngband, and bring forth the next generation of players. :)

That may be the best idea I've heard for bringing back interest in MAngband. Count me in, and let's get this started as soon as possible.
One idea though. It might be good if you could get character dumps going before the competition, that way people could post their current characters to Angband.oook with comments, and the winner would also be able to make a final character dump for posting when the competition is over, since a dump conveys alot more information than just a ranking and score on the current ladder.

I totally agree Avenger.  I'm working on character dumps.

I'm setting it up so when a character dies, the character dump is shipped over to the website where the ironman ladder is held (http://mangband.org.uk/ironman.php).  Clicking on a player name will allow you to download the character dump as a plain text file.  Obviously this will only work for dead players, not the ones on the ladder who are still alive.

There is a downside to the character dump.  In Ironman MAngband forms of object ID are in short supply.  So this online character dump could be a bit upsetting for dead players, when they check their character dump, and realise that the unidentified ring they've been carrying around wasn't a {cursed} Ring of Teleportation, but rather a Ring of Speed +5. :-)

Sounds good; but do you think it would be feasible to create live char dumps? That way we could post running commentary of our characters on the ladder, which I think would be good for a contest like this.
BTW, the issues with 0.7.0-beta client appear to be resolved. Thanks for the fix.

This is a great idea and I support it 100%.
I've already been playing a bit on the experimental Ironman server and in my opinion Ironman MAngband is the greatest thing since the first few months of MAngband - and that sure is something special.

As for live dumps I think this could work just fine, however the risk of player killing might increase dramatically if everyone can at all times see every object in the other players inventory. Of course, since you can't go up it's rather unlikely that you'll run into anyone who can kill you the bastard way we've often seen at other servers and variants, but still.

One solution, though possibly too demanding would be if every player would have to register through a web site (for dumps to work) and then the dump would be saved there in a password protected page that only the user himself could access.

Then they can post their characters to wherever they'd like, at their own risk... of course.

However, all who have played Ironman MAngband know that it's fast and mean, most likely there won't be a lot of room for player killing, unless the game becomes very popular and thus, "this dungeon is too small for the both of us!"

And btw, I'm sure you've already thought of this, Jug - Live character dumps should only show the same info that the player himself can see, or else it'd work like a cheap mass identify. :)

There are too many technical issues with live character dumps for me to implement them just yet.  Live characters are displayed on the Ironman MAngband ladder with some basic information (they are the ones in green).

Live characters tend to change into dead characters in a very short space of time in Ironman anyway, so I hope this won't be a major issue.

I've been fleshing out the competition idea and I've updated the competition post above.  The iPod Nano ups the stakes a bit :)
