BigJuan is a Punk!
Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
Nobody will discuse that, what you do with your arts is Your problem nobody else.
The point is, you play againt other player or againts the Pits of angband Dungeon.
If that so.. Nobody id the king of the hill. by being respect you become, as flint , a protector of everybody, not a despotic king. Beinng the best you have responsability of rescue somebody for deeps than nobody else can go.
Protect the other form pks.
I play with the other players not against them.
I i give him a good artifact , is cos they will help me succed in killing sauron.
We have diferents point of view I play for fun, and compite with the dungeon, you play for compite and the dungeon is only a place to get XP.
I Play Pencil and papers role playing games.. this is an rpg, so i try to give it the same spirit of play.
I respect your way of play. That's all.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
Thank you for that respect. However, your views of this game and mine are different.
I respect your style and desired method of play, I just don't share the same views.
Best of luck to you :)

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
I fail to see where killing a ghost is against the rules, but I still don't like it. However I only have admin on the forums, so I have to watch and do nothing, because I don't have time to sneak in and make a character that can attack you.
Face the facts. Nobody really has the time or ability to get the skills to kill you with your uber-gear. Especially when you've got your equally-ubered-up buddy and your ditto-alts ready to defend you. Nobody can beat one of you in a straight-up duel, because your gear is way bigger - your arts of choice are better than the best ego-items, and now you've got boots of speed +10. When someone has better gear than you, which usually happens before that person has other gear worthy of battling you, you kill them and take it. The gap widens, and if we want this game to live, you need to stop doing that. Setting a trap in the dungeon is out of the question because you have what it takes (skills, magic, potions, scrolls, staves, rods) to avoid death in oh-crap scenarios, even at the bottom. You can talk all you want about arrows of wounding while you're in the store, but who is actually going to do enough damage to you before you come out and teleport them away - and then destroy them for trying? "Oh, I'm random, see, so that makes it okay - maybe I'll be good tomorrow" is the poorest excuse I've ever seen for murder. Like I said, you will kill this game if you keep doing that.
Sure, it's a king of the hill game for you, but when nobody else can even come close, it's not a game anymore. Retire and go home in victory, because nobody likes a tyrant.
You guys need to learn to compromise.
Leave it where it lies, and fill my pack up with the other loot in the vault, maybe grab it to sell if there's nothing worth more left there. Although, at that middle-aged level, it may be worth while to pawn it for some cash. It's not going to kill you to do that. I thought there was a mandate about housing artifacts, but I could be wrong. So, tell me...what are you going to do with a boomerang?

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
I fail to see where your post has any relevance, Berendol.
I can appreciate your views as well as anyone elses. I discard your opinions as personally unimportant.
Sure, you're an admin here on the boards, and sure, you can lock any thread you want, or delete any post, or ban any poster. You go right on ahead and enjoy that power. Me, I'm just a player like everyone else. If people wanted to, as Domino and I have said, kill us, they're more than welcome to try. I quit playing for at LEAST seven months (that's simply going off when I moved...it's quite possible that it was before then), so if people can't grow in that time, it's not my fault or problem.
As to you, sac up and step up, or shut up. Either way, I'll be happy.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
I gotcha...but here's the deal.
Let's say that *all* of the arts are found. There's none available...and you kill something that would drop something awesome. Instead of dropping a boomerang (which, believe me, happens enough on the bottom), it instead drops something else...a speed ring, a REALLY nice weapon, etc.
I see and understand what you're saying about mid-level arts. I, too, used to lust over arts. I had an absolute FIT the first time I found ANY (waaaay back when the server was being handed over/taken over 'tween Alex and Crimson). I immediatly jumped up and ran next door to tell Domino of my AWESOME find.
...who then pointed and laughed at me.
By taking these things out of the equation, it's helping to level the playing field. The chances that you'll get a Holy Avenger and one of the boomerang arts are about the same...so...if these garbage weapons are currently unavailable...your chances just improved for getting a better (both in damage, bonuses AND coins for selling) weapon. Of course, it's all random...the RNG could simply roll and give you boots of stealth instead...but the point is that "junk" items are being removed from the equation. In a lot of cases, the odds are better that you'll FIND a HA before you'll fine a boomerang, anyway.
Meh. I'm just rambling at this point, methinks.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
Sure, okay. I'll dump my girl, and start a character with my two or three hours of free time that I'll now have every day, that I haven't had while you were gone. Then maybe I can compete with you, who's already at level 50 and have you and your buddies beat up on me. No thanks, I'll just drop in every few days and continue to make sure we don't get our forums spammed by the viagra people or whatever.
Don't think I don't support some people dying repeatedly in the game. I got rid of Later after a lot of irritating work. Kull is on my list as well. But when I see so many people crying out to the forums for help from their distant admin, I have to notice and say something. If you don't like being called out... maybe that's an indicator of something, hmm?
Your style of playing conflicts badly enough with the incoming crowd that it's hurting the game. Again. This has happened before. I'd set up another server for them if I had a working computer. Remember, someone hacked the old one, and I almost lost interest - then the hard drive died twice, and I gave up trying to buy new parts.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
alright so what i think i said when i first posted on this subject was DROP IT! you guys are just firing back and forth at each other and for what? when i found my first artifact, which was a really lucky find, i was excited and kept it for about a month. i later tried to sell it, even give it away. so what what if someone is being an art whore, they are probably proud of what they found. how bout i come through with a level 50 a take all your pride, you wouldnt enjoy it. so people who are whinning about the art whores shut the hell up and leave them be. art whores who are trying to justify themselves, however poorly, shut the hell up as well. you guys just dont seem to get it. replying to this post other than to agree with me just proves my point.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
I think the root of this post has been purposefully led astray. My original point was that while it might be acceptable to kill someone for their gear, which you stated was what you did, I think killing someones ghost is more than just mean, and then killing the next character they logged on with more than proves the point. You say you came at me for my gear, I say that's a lie. First, you are many levels ahead of me, and should have little use of anything I would be carrying.
I noticed that when you logged on you started by recalling to 750 ft and working your way down from there. That sounds to me like you were trying to find someone. Why else recall so low? Not for the gear or the experience. Your character is what level? You needed something that low? You made it down 1200 ft in less than 1/2 an hour so I doubt you were looking for anything besides someone in particular.
I also doubt you were wanting my gear based on how you made it off the stairs and made straigtht for me and was attacking me in an instant. When, in your charge, did you have time to stop and add me to your hostile list? Do you have a macro that auto adds anyone playing? Congrats on killing the player half your level and getting the gear from him you wanted...wait, how is it you knew what gear I had again? Was it that instant where you stopped and probed me with some uber top level spell I have't seen yet that tells you what gear someone is wearing?
Admit it, you started low, already had hostiled me and rushed at me the moment you saw me just to kill me, not for the gear, that was just a bonus for you. You and Angus came on specifically to kill me, likely in retailiation for my Artifact post.
Congratulations. You succeeded.
You also succeded in driving away me, my wife, my friends who play, an any possibility of me recommending this to anyone else. I've had some time to cool off and think about this and I've realized that I'll probably have more fun playing Diablo. Have fun reigning over your tiny, tiny kingdom and remember, they hung Mussolini in the streets.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
Well congratulations Bigjuan and Angus, we just lost another player.
I hope it will stop at that, because we don't need to make this community any smaller. Bran, I hope you reconsider, because most of the people here do not act like that, and we certainly do not condone this type of behavior. You had potential to become a good player of this game, and to see you leave because of this makes no one happy.
Bigjuan, Angus, if you're gonna say you killed someone for their stuff...
THE GHOST DOES NOT NEED TO DIE!
The ghost does not have an inventory, and the ghost does not have equipment, and when he resurrects, he will no longer have the item you killed him for.
Killing a player's ghost is only necessary when that player actually poses a threat to you or to the community, and if you destroyed Kull in this way, I'm sure no one would give it a second thought.
But a new, learning player like Bran does not deserve this. Killing his body was probably more than enough, newer players (even veteran players like myself) die often enough in this game without another player hastening the process. And on top of this normal death, wiping out all that players experience and any chance a recovering their items is completely unnecesary and unacceptable. This requires that they start completely from scratch, and that is never fun when it is not done by choice.
Also it is not good for the newer players to see some of our best veteran players return to the game like this. It's bad enough when a rogue player like Kull does this, but when two respected and well known players do this, it does absolutely nothing to help the game. At least when Kull came back, he managed to recall and unite some of the older player(such as myself and Narchan) to help protect our growing community.
Please do not kill newer players, and do not kill ghosts unless you have a very good reason. We do not need to lose any more players like this.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
Heh this sounds like fun. Im going to have to get a computer up and running just so I can start playing again and the 3 of us can start rampaging again like we used to. Angus/Bigjuan and myself it out to be fun. If your whinning after we kill you your ghost is fair game if you ask me. If you keep your mouth shut most of the time myself Bj and angus will leave you alone, so if you want to stay alive just rember to shut up and play. Pretty simple if you ask me.

Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
I think this thread has forked, so I'll just address the two people seperately here.
Bran:
Of course ghost killing is mean. It's the single meanest thing you can do to someone here. I mean, there's right-down evil things that can (and have) be done...but Avenger is perfectly right. There's no better way to, for lack of a better description, deficate on someone's grave then to ghost kill them. It's the ultimate flip-off. Of course, Domino ghost killed you.
Unfortunately, it's also part of the game. Ghosts can and do die. The biggest difference here, I think (and, again, this is just me thinking out loud...I could be totally wrong), is that you didn't do anything. You didn't quit out when you died, you didn't float back to town, nothing. Sure, it could be argued that you wanted your gear, but by the same token, you just got killed by another player. I didn't go "oh, feh, sorry" (or something similar to indicate it was an accident)...so you could kiss your gear goodbye. Instead, you chose to not ONLY stay logged in and on the level, but you floated around. Yes, we could have tunneled our way to you, but for the moment, you were safe. How different, do you think, would this discussion be if you had, say, steped out into a pack of acid hounds while floating around? The net result would have been the same.
Ghost killing sucks. I've lost BIG characters that way...stair down into a bunch of baddies who breathe at me and poof me, only to have my ghost appear right next to something else equally bad and have IT zap me. Total time 'tween going down and ghost death? 1 second, POSSIBLY 2. Next time, I seriously advise that you either log out or float up.
Avenger:
I drove away a player? The whole argument of "well, how long until he died and ghost died to some nasty pack of hounds or something" aside, I *personally* brought one player to the game yesterday, helped out a newbie, and helped out another character who isn't a COMPLETE newbie, but newbie-ish enough (well, the newbie-ish guy was actually the day prior, but it was AFTER killing what's-his-face). So, sure, I'll be quite happy to drive one player away if I bring a new person to replace him or her, as well as help out two other characters. Wouldn't you agree?
As for not having a good reason for killing ghosts? I've got a rather valid reason...it's doable. I don't always ghost kill, but there are times when I do, and there's only one person I need to explain myself to, if he so chooses.

When the winds of change blow hard enough, the most trivial of things can turn into deadly projectiles.
Re: BigJuan is a Punk!
What is the real point of this game? If you look at vanilla Angband, the point is to become powerful and kill the big bad guy. Pretty simple.
I'm fairly new to the MAngband community and I haven't really scoured the page about vision and whatnot, I just downloaded it and poked around for a while so I may be completely off base but this is what I would hope this game is all about.
This game should be all about building a powerful character or party and going to kill the big bad guy. The MP aspect of the game should be one of cooperation, Angband has always been an extremely challenging and unforgiving game. It doesn't need to get any harder, especially not by adding yet another extremely sneaky and powerful adversary.
I have absolutely no problem with dueling, but for the most part, my preferred playing style is one of camaraderie and enjoying the game with other players... people who share the same interests in dungeon delving and stat building and finding that next sweet item.
PKers in this arena are simply bullys. You've lost all interest in the game as a game and now your only enjoyment comes from causing others to lose theirs. That is the most disgraceful and pitiful mentality. Go play Guild Wars if you want some good player on player action, oh yeah, that's not what you're after. You just want to grief someone else.
No game should make room for griefers no matter how they try to defend it. Just because a game allows something doesn't mean it's what the community desires... especially for a pre 1.0 game.
