Auto-retire
Auto-retire
When someone kills Morgoth, are they going to auto-retire? How long does it take?
One player said it was 100 turns; that seems like not even enough time to recall and sell the items he drops.
I think it should last at least until Morgoth comes back to life. That would give the person time to play with Grond and the Crown.

Re: Auto-retire
It's a per-server setting. I don't think we have auto-retire enabled on the official Mangband server. We didn't before the Great Server Reset of 2002, right Domino? I agree with you, though. IIRC the default setting for a fresh-out-of-the-tarball server is 100 of something, most likely turns. I suppose the way to calculate the time it'd take Morgoth to come back to life would be to take the maximum unique respawn time (yep, that's a configurable feature -- good stuff) and set the auto-retire timer to that. I don't remember whether auto-retire's set in the config file or if it's in one of the source code header files (which would force a recompile if you wanted to change it) and I can't look it up right now - I'm sitting in the Kodak lab here at RIT, on a Mac... waiting for a photo to print... an 8x10 takes awhile at 2880 dpi. Useless(?) tidbit of info: If you play deeper, turns go by slower.

Re: Auto-retire
Crimson told me that he had enabled auto-retire on the main mangband.org instance. He further stated that it was set to 100 hours but wasn't sure if that would translate to 100 hours game time or 100 hours playing time.

I plan on doing that. I just wanted to find out how long I'd have left to live.

Re: Auto-retire
The retire timer is currently set at 6000, which should be suffiicient to "play" with the artifcats before being retired. The reason this is in there is to prevent people from endlessly scumming for the artifacts they hadn't found after winning the game to get Grond/Helm, which both make you pretty much invincible.

Re: Auto-retire
That's in game minutes, btw, so 100 hours game time, as currently set.

Re: Auto-retire
In all honesty (and with all due respect) who in their right mind is going to do this? Taking Jube as the classic example, there IS no real end for this game, so to speak. There isn't a point where you can't get any more gold, a point where you can't get any more xp. The only "obtainable" goal is killing Morgoth...and, honestly, ANYONE could do it. How many people can say they're the biggest character, has the most wealth, etc?
In my opinion, I think auto-retire is foolish. When I start playing again, I'll NEVER kill him. Ever. There's no point. I'm a greedy, selfish bastard who wants nothing more than to amass wealth and xp, and to then taunt other players with it.
Call me crazy, but that's how I am.
Now, say, if there was a hard limit to the amount of xp you got, or gold you could have, sure...I'd get to that point THEN go hose Morgy...there's nothing left to achieve. But, sadly, if killing Morgoth means the end of my character...no thanks.

Re: Auto-retire
Actually there is a hard limit to xp... 99,999,999 xp.. I achieved this last game with Angus before retiring him. This game I plan on achieving the xp limit and hopefully the gold limit which I believe to be 999,999,999 AU but I am not certain since the most I have obtained so far is 270,000,000 and change.. I'm workin on it and then I will kill Morgoth and retire.

One thing I've always liked about Angband, both Vanilla and Multiplayer, is the open-endedness. Most games force you to trundle along a set path, towards predetermined goals, but in Angband, you can do anything you want. The de jure goal is to kill Morgoth, but you can go about doing that any way you want, at any pace you want, and you don't even need to do it at all. Some people can try to kill all the uniques, others hunt for the One Ring, others collect dozens of slime molds and give them names. It's all good.
I'm not a particularly skilled player after the early levels, and I don't anticipate I will ever succeed in killing Morgoth. But that doesn't spoil the game for me.
